Our History

The Soul of Seattle’s mission is to highlight, celebrate, and embrace the Black community of Seattle. Our inaugural event in 2020 was a success! With 10 participating Black Chefs and 5 beverage vendors, the outpouring of support for the Black community–both corporate and civilian– was incredible. Our event was held at the Northwest African American Museum and included over 550 General Admission attendees, and 100 VIP dinner guests. This inaugural celebration helped us raise over $300,000 with proceeds awarded to local Black own restaurants, The Rainier Scholars and The Seattle Urban League. For a first time event, this reflects just how much events like these, that foster, celebrate, and highlight Black individuals in Seattle are needed and wanted.

In February 2021, The Soul of Seattle was an entirely virtural month-long series of events that supported Black owned businesses, restaurants, and youth of color focused organizations in Seattle. Our event series included live cooking demonstrations with local chefs, panel discussions with national Black culinary leaders, weekly silent auctions, and curated gift boxes featuring items from local businesses. Over $650,000 was raised and proceeds benefited over 30 Black owned businesses and restaurants, as well as $100,000 went to support the local nonprofit Mentoring Urban Students & Teens.

The Soul of Seattle partnered with Northwest Harvest (fiscal sponsor), who are leaders in not only fulfilling the immediate need of food insecurity, but are also tackling the systemic issues behind food injustice.
